About North East Maryland Select (NEMS)

Founded in 1997 by Jim and Lisa McHugh to enter a single tournament, North East Maryland Select operates out of Bel Air, MD with mail handled at PO Box 1222. The club draws families across Harford, Cecil, and Baltimore Counties, as well as Southern Pennsylvania. The club states that uniforms display a cowboy hat honoring founding president Jim McHugh, who passed away in January 2005. PROGRAMS
Programs

NEMS fields 10 teams organized by graduation year, with team placement beginning as early as third grade. The curriculum organizes tiers into Elementary School (Fundamentals & Development), Middle School (Competitive Play & Game IQ), and High School (Exposure & College Recruitment). The club notes its schedule combines experienced coaching, year-round training, and strong recruiting guidance across every age group. Fall programming includes team practices and 2-4 tournaments at various MD locations, followed by winter indoor skills, position training, and team practices. The spring schedule includes team practices and NGLL MidAtlantic league season competition, followed by summer practices and 3-5 tournaments in MD, PA, NJ. Workouts and practices take place across Rutledge Park, John Carroll HS, Soccer Factory, and DUBS Sports. Roster opportunities include 2026–2027 Supplemental Tryouts for 2031 Yellow & 2035U lineups.

The Cowboy Hat Legacy

NEMS states that the cowboy hat on every uniform honors founding president Jim McHugh, known for wearing a signature cowboy hat at tournaments so players and families could spot him; he passed away suddenly in January 2005.
